This is a story about street racing: a Beetle that managed to outrun US muscle cars and the guy that built it nicknamed The Professor.
Please have patience with a mediocre translation into English. The text is also a bit shorter compared to the Swedish version, but I will try to translate the fun and interesting parts.
During five years (1977-81), this silver-colored -56 Volkswagen type-1, in the story named The Silver Gray Beetle, became the most circumscribed street racer in Sweden. This story is written 40 years after it all happened and is my own perspective; highly subjective, self-aggrandizement inspired by claims and myths that circulate. The tale is full of details and addresses a small group of people with a really deep interest.
Notes were written down by hand back in the day and these records still exist to support the story. I thought it was interesting to document improvements and other things. Of the 71 races in total, there were six losses and this story will cover virtually everything including dreams, lots of elbow grease and broken parts. And let me initially deny the statement in social media that I eventually was killed in an accident with the car: something that otherwise might have been an appropriate end of a career.
Part of the myth around me and the car is a pure result of all the stories that have been written about my achievements. A number of articles have been published in both car magazines (as late as 2019) and daily newspapers (2003). The greatest moment was perhaps a program on two national television channels in late 1977, which gave a comprehensive response (both positive and negative) about my escapades with the Silver Gray Beetle. As an example, the TV chronicle in the tabloid Aftonbladet Macke Nilsson called the program “disgusting propaganda about lazy car nuts”, and in the Swedish consumer journal Motor there was a letter to the editor about “Qualified Crime” – however, the editorial board responded with something like “misdirected motor interest”. Another lesser-known publication appeared in the American magazine Hot VW and Dune Buggies February 1979. All this attention certainly contributed to the spread of certain stories outside of Sweden about a Volkswagen that outrun fast muscle cars.
The program about the silver grey Beetle, me and a few other street racers was a big happening in 1977 when there were only two channels broadcasting in Sweden.
